One Truth

What do you believe is ultimately true?

Our beliefs about what is truly true guide our life. If we were diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease, our life would be changed. Even if we didn't believe the diagnosis, the truth remains true. Our ever-worsening condition would confirm that. In the same way, if we believe in what is not true, belief alone can't change things. Believing the earth is flat does not make it flat. So what is ultimately true and how can we discover it? Although there are many supposed ‘truths' competing for our commitments, when it comes to what God has revealed, there is only one truth.

We believe that the Scriptures come back to four truths, or four essentials, when they talk about living life as God intended. Number three of these essentials points us to the fact that we have been called to follow God, through Jesus Christ, according to the truth that God has given us in Scripture.

At various times and in various ways, our Creator has revealed himself. The Bible is a record of these revelations and the primary means by which God reveals himself today. This is why followers of Jesus Christ should be a students of God's word. There is nothing else that compares to the Bible because all "Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (II Timothy 3:16, 17) Paul encouraged Timothy to do "your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (II Timothy 2:15) This "word of truth" includes not only the New Testament, but also the Old Testament, which Paul had in mind when he wrote, "everything that was written in the past was written to teach us" (Romans 15:4). We can confess with King David, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." (Psalm 119:105) But we also must hear James' warning: "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." (James 1:22) A follower of Jesus Christ is a student of God's truth, not in order to simply know, but in order to know God and love him more.

We would love to tell you more about what it means to live life as God intended as a follower of Jesus Christ. Click the "contact us" link above to reach us or join us this Sunday.
